September 2026 (Az.

Was Telekom-Magenta und Sparkassen-Rot anders machen

Denn Farbe beeinflusst wesentliche Faktoren wirtschaftlicher Kommunikation:

Abstract

3. Forschungsfragen und Hypothesen

Forschungsfragen

From Research to Real-World Solutions

As a researcher in color psychology, I have long been interested in how color influences human perception and behavior. With the Bona Resilient color collection, I aimed to translate these insights into practical solutions—developing a color palette that extends the life of elastic floors and enhances their aesthetic value.

Sustainable Design Through Color

The Bona Resilient color collection allows elastic floors to be refinished rather than replaced, reducing waste and conserving resources. By aligning color design with the natural role of flooring as a long-lasting building element, the collection helps create interiors that are both durable and visually cohesive.

Timeless Colors for Long-Lasting Surfaces

Floors are fundamental to interior design—yet they are also among the most permanent and resource-intensive elements of a space. The Bona Resilient palette focuses on restrained, natural tones that support timeless design. This approach allows for color accents to emerge through elements that can be refreshed more easily, such as walls and furnishings.

Color Design with Measurable Impact

The success of Bona Resilient demonstrates how carefully developed color strategies can contribute to both sustainability goals and market success. By addressing aesthetic and functional needs, the collection offers a practical, long-term solution for maintaining and updating elastic flooring.

Color Psychology as a Design Tool

Each color in the Bona Resilient collection is based on evidence from color psychology research—considering how colors influence emotions, well-being, and the perception of space. The palette is designed to create calm, balanced environments across a wide range of applications, from healthcare to education and commercial spaces.

Supporting Global Design Needs

While developed in collaboration with Bona, the Bona Resilient color collection is relevant for projects around the world. Its universal, nature-inspired colors can adapt to different cultural contexts and design languages—offering a flexible solution for architects, designers, and facility managers.

Color as a Bridge Between Aesthetics and Sustainability

My goal with this project was to help shift the perception of elastic floors—from a purely functional surface to a design element that contributes to the character and longevity of a space. By enabling reuse instead of replacement, the color collection supports a more sustainable, resource-conscious approach to design.

The project began with a call for help from the intensive care team:

„… I currently work in the neonatal intensive care unit at the Klinikum Links der Weser. Next summer we will move to a new building. The care of premature babies and their parents involves so much more than „just“ intensive care. Unfortunately, we have no lobby whatsoever as far as the color scheme is concerned. White walls, LED spots, … a dreary experience. In terms of equipment, everything will be there, but what makes up our special care is totally lost. Patients and their parents often stay on our ward for months. As nursing staff, our hair stands on end…… This is no way to create an atmosphere of well-being. Can you give us a hand? Can you help us to create a good working atmosphere and enable the fruits to arrive well in this world?…“ (19.11.2020)

Abstract

This study examines the influence of color design on the well-being and satisfaction of patients, relatives and staff using the practical example of the department of neonatology in the Clinic for Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine in Central Hospital Bremen. In continuation of our previous studies, a new building was available for a study here for the first time. The color redesign of the neonatology ward in the new clinic building became necessary because the largely monochrome color design of the ward (white walls and ceilings, yellow floors throughout) met with vehement rejection from the medical, therapeutic and nursing staff, which was expressed both verbally and in writing. The color redesign was carried out in a participatory process according to an evidence-based methodology.

The assessment of well-being, quality of stay, emotional mood, orientation and motivation improved on average by 207% from 4.3 (negative) to 2.1 (positive).

Results of the study:

the color scheme is a significant factor for the well-being. (Overall result of the survey before the color change from 4.2 rather negative to 2.1 rather positive afterwards).

white walls do not have a neutral effect, but significantly counteract the well-being of patients, relatives and staff (overall result of the survey before the color change of 4.2 is significantly worse than the neutral result of 3).

The distribution of the answers proves that the effects of color and space can be objectively assessed, planned and used in the structural context of the utilization situation for the benefit of the user groups concerned. Deviations in the distribution of answers prove that the effects of color in space remain subjective within a range that is tolerable, as it does not significantly affect the success of the design (See chart).

the color design of the architecture has positive effects on the medical and nursing activities of the staff if it is needs-oriented and evidence-based. (From 3.8 rather negative to 2.3 rather positive)

the color design of the architecture promotes the well-being of patients if it is needs-oriented and evidence-based (from 3.8 rather negative to 2.3 rather positive)

architectural color design promotes parent well-being, trust, and confidence when it is needs-based and evidence-based (from 4.4 tending to negative to 1.5 tending to positive)

architectural color design promotes staff well-being and quality of stay when it is needs-based and evidence-based (from 4.4 tending to negative to 2.1 tending to positive)

the color design of the architecture promotes the staff’s feeling that the employer values their activity, if it is needs-oriented and evidence-based (from 4.2 rather negative to 2.4 rather positive)

the color design of the architecture promotes the identification of the staff with the place of work, if it is needs-oriented and evidence-based (from 4.2 rather negative to 2.3 rather positive)

the color design of the architecture has a positive effect on the emotional mood and motivation of the staff if it is needs-oriented and evidence-based (from 4.2 rather negative to 2.1 rather positive)

the color design of the architecture has a positive effect on orientation in the ward if it is needs-oriented and evidence-based (from 4.6 negative and 2.0 rather positive)

the color design of the architecture has a positive effect on the effectiveness of regeneration during breaks, if it is needs-oriented and evidence-based (from 4.6 rather negative to 2.5 rather positive)

the color design of the architecture has a positive effect on the attractiveness of the workplace for staff if it is needs-oriented and evidence-based (from 4.5 rather negative to 1.8 rather positive)

Location and extent of the study:

HELIOS University Hospital Wuppertal – clinic in intensive-care medicine station B2-2, Extent: the entire station with 15 patient rooms, 21 beds, and 4 doctor’s rooms. The station B2-2 is simultaneously the third and largest intensive care unit, which we designed and investigated during the ongoing research study. The results of our first study have been factored into the strategy of the redesign of the station B2-2.

Period of the examination:

24 months (2018/19)

Research questions:

1) Which impact has the design of colour and light in intensive care units on the well-being and health status of the patients?

2) Which impact has the design of colour and light in intensive care units on the motivation to work, the demeanour, and the well-being of the medical as well as the nursing staff?

3) Which impact has the design of colour and light in intensive care units on the ill health status of the staff?

Summary of the results:

Significant improvements in the quality of stay and experience of patients and staff were observed and proven in all areas covered. The ill health status amongst ward personnel fell by 35,37 % within one year compared to both previous years. The severe skill shortage enhances this result with additional relevance.

Particularly significant with the surveys of the patients was:

• the medical and nursing staff were perceived distinctly calmer by the patients during their care (improvement by 35,7%)

• the intensive care unit appeared distinctly nicer (improvement by 56,8%), more stimulating (improvement by 51,4%), more inviting (improvement by 50,0%), and warmer (improvement by 34,6%)

• the atmosphere in the room took a significantly quieter effect to the patients (reduction of the noise level by 48,6%) and less hectic (improvement of the quiescent level by 40,6%)

Particularly significant with the surveys of the staff was:

• the staff satisfaction with the employer (improvement by 35,7%) and with their work

(improvement by 35,1%) increased significantly

• the well-being was shown by the satisfaction with the condition of the workplace (improvement by 51,2%), the break room (improvement by 66,7%), the patient rooms (improvement by 48,8%) as well as the corridors and other work areas (improvement by 45,2%)

• the colour design had a particularly strong impact on the assessment of orientation (improvement by 42,9%), colourfulness (improvement by 58,7%), artificial light quality (improvement by 52,4%), daylight quality (improvement by 48,7%), and identity (improvement by 50,0%)

Research method:

The Semantic Differential (polarity profile) was used for the interviews with patients and staff, in which the respondents could choose between two opposing effects. Staff and patients were asked generally understandable questions for which they could distribute simple evaluations according to school marks. After an introduction, the staff filled in the questionnaires on their own and handed in most of them. The survey is therefore representative. The patients were personally interviewed by a scientific assistant after approval by the ward management to ensure the validity of the feedback and the equivalence of the results. This individual procedure noticeably relieved the nursing staff, who conducted the surveys of the first study in addition to all other activities.

Reason and target of the study:

The reason for the present study was the attempt to verify the results of our first study. At the same time, some influencing factors were to be corrected in order to increase both the validity of the results as well as the effectiveness of the design interventions. In our second study, the staff’s sickness absence rate was surveyed for the first time in order to obtain figures which demonstrate the impact of environmental design through atmospheric factors such as light and colours on human well-being and health.[1]

Next to the treatment with pharmaceuticals, today, further influencing variables are increasingly looked for, which benefit the well-being and the recovery of patients and can prevent a delirium. In this correlation, the perception of the architectural room gets into focus, especially the atmospherical effects of clinical environments. Hitherto, there exist worldwide only a few studies which prove the influence of the architectural room on the well-being and the health status of humans[2]. This gap in research applies to the entire range of medical institutions. Within the scope of intensive-care medicine, this issue operates particularly problematic as the clinical environment benefits negative emotions such as fear, panic, disorientation, loneliness, and depression. These effects can endanger life and health of patients. In this context, the effects of the architectural room on the well-being and the job satisfaction of the medical as well as the nursing staff have to be considered.

Framework of the study:

An opportunity for this study was offered on occasion of the approaching measures of renovation of the ward B2-2 of the clinic in intensive-care medicine in the HELIOS University Hospital Wuppertal. The measures of renovation were limited to a new coat of painting of the walls, ceilings, and doors as well as the replacement of the entire illuminants. For financial reasons, it had to be refrained from the renovation of the floors, furnishings, and medical technology. The valuations of patients and staff were gathered quantitively as well as qualitatively by questionnaires and interviews prior to and after the renovation. To minimise bias like the impression of novelty, the survey was conducted not until 3 months after the occupation of the renovated rooms.

The ill health status was documented and evaluated in a representative reference period of 12 months prior to and after the renovation. The entire measure was documented with interviews, pictures, and cinematically.

Differentiation:

In this study, we restricted to the investigation of the visual influencing variables colour and light. Other factors of perception such as acoustics (language, noises), scent (cleaning and disinfection solution, material), and taste (food, medication) were disregarded in this study, and yet should be subject of further examinations.

Evaluation of the patients’ interviews

Average evaluation of design and general satisfaction of the patients of both wards in pre-post comparison (patients of both wards were only partially captured as only responsive cases could be interviewed = the result is contingent representative, however, shows clear tendencies, further studies are required)
